Dreamlinux 4.0 Gnome – Sneak Peak

We are currently playing with a new base (DL-4.0), new kernel (.29-3) new modules, and nelsongs´ new distro building and module creation scripts. I have been left alone to play with the Fluxbox edition (Which I hope they will let me name DreamFlux), but in the meantime we got our hands on nelsongs’ preliminary Gnome desktop modules to play with on the new base and kernel.

Dreamlinux 4.0 Gnome – What have we got so far?
Debian Squeeze base and repositories
Gnome Version – 2.26.1
Kernel – 2.6.29.3-dream
File System – Ext4
Media – 700Mb CD iso
Applications – New innovative stand alone click’n'run application system
Wbar – New dock which will replace Engage on Dreamlinux
DLI – New improved Dreamlinux Installer

First Impressions
I do all my testing on my laptop which has an ATI 9600 graphics card, and Broadcom wireless internet connection. Obviously the fact that Dreamlinux is the only Linux distro to have Broadcom wireless working out of the box is very important to me. In fact Dreamlinux has ALL available wireless firmware/kernel modules preinstalled.

The Live CD
Fast, for a Gnome live CD, very fast indeed. Booted to desktop in under 2 minutes for me.

Installing Dreamlinux
I used Gparted to format a spare partition to Ext4, then ran the new DLI (single window) installer. Added root password, my box name, username and password, then chose the Ext4 and Swap partitons. Chose install Grub to MBR and hit install.
7 minutes later (5 of which were /usr files) it was ready to go. I rebooted, got the grub menu with my other distros listed (Dreamliunux Fluxbox edition and Backtrack 3) clicked Dreamlinux 4, logged in, and was at the desktop in under a minute.

Not much to see at the moment, it’s early days, but here are some screenies for you:

Preview over
Well, that was the sneak preview of what’s to come. Dreamlinux 4.0 has no release date at the moment, and is still under heavy development. There will be the standard default Xfce edition, Gnome edition, Fluxbox edition and possibly an Lxde edition as well.

The aim is to keep Dreamlinux light, fast, and stable. There will be a few changes, and some amazing innovations with this release. They will not be announced until the final release as they will most certainly be “borrowed” by other distros.

My first preliminary tests show Dreamlinux to be stable, sweet looking and bloody fast!!

    6. No Steve, it will have to be a fresh install this time round, although a dist-upgrade solution is being worked on.
